Top Three: Cupcakes Delivered to Your Door

Ling brought to my attention a while back that I rarely speak about the sweet things offered in Shanghai. I think that is because at most Chinese restaurants, the only dessert that is ever offered is fruit – usually watermelon. The watermelon is a perfect fresh ending to an oily, MSG filled meal.
Well, upon her behest, I have recently gone on a food quest – to find not only the perfect cupcake in this city, but also to find one that can be delivered to my door. Because Ling is pretty obsessed with anything miniature, I figured cupcakes would satiate her need for both something sweet and something small.
After awaking from a sugar-induced coma, I have found that perfect and comforting cupcake. These are my Top Three:
Shanghai’s single best box of cupcakes
1. Oh My Goodness Bakery : ¥¥¥ 电话 +86 139 1876 6874, www.omgbakery.com
Oh my goodness, these are good. Jenna, a native of New York, is the only baker in Shanghai offering completely organic cupcakes. If comfort is what you are seeking in your cake, these ones will surely hit the spot. Made the way you remember your mother baking them, with thick creamy frosting and moist cake, they will satisfy any need for a sweet reminder of home. Best cupcake? Carrot with cream cheese frosting.
2. C’est Cupcake : ¥¥¥ 电话 +86 6228 1205, www.cestcupcake.com
C’est Cupcake, run by Jennifer, specializes in couture cakes. They are definitely attractive – each one adorned with a flower whose color corresponds with its flavor. The frosting, however thin, is pretty tasty (though the Tahitian vanilla bourbon is completely lost in the Triple Vanilla). The actual cakes are flavorful, but on the dry side. Here, aesthetics are certainly the focus, as Jennifer will create any cupcake design you think of. Best bet? The Elvis – banana cake topped with a creamy peanut butter frosting (just not enough of it).
3. Sweet Ever After : ¥¥¥ 电话 +86 6255 5512, www.sweeteverafter.com
These aren’t that bad…for Shanghai. The menu at Sweet Ever After is certainly the most creative, offering cupcakes like Honey-Bee Green Tea and Open Sesame. Ling and I couldn’t decide if the cakes were way undercooked or just too moist. And, there was a certain flavor we couldn’t put our fingers on that was present in all of the cakes. Their best cupcake? Southern Red Velvet, complete with chopped Georgia pecans.
Honorable Mention: Baker + Spice
Note: the ¥ rating here refers to a single order of a dozen.

we haven’t tried oh my goodness yet, but how are they better then cest cupcakes?
who is ling?
I’ve only tried Sweet Ever After, and I agree that the Red Velvet Cupcakes ARE THE BEST. The triple chocolate ones are also really good.
