About This Shanghai Food Blog
Food is such a basic part of our lives – we literally cannot live without it. The way we eat it and the rituals and customs that surround it can give us great insight into a specific culture. What, then, does the ever-evolving Shanghai food scene teach us about Shànghǎirén?
In my quest to unveil the practices behind the Shanghai food culture (which will cover all food offered in Shanghai, not just Shanghainese cuisine), I will review restaurants, discover markets, find the best street food as well as the best food streets, learn how to cook a few local dishes, and of course, try to get a hold of the perfect dumpling in the Hai. I will also be providing a working glossary of Chinese terms used in the blog. Feel free to check out the “Glossary” page – the pinyin (the modern transliteration system), Chinese characters, and English definitions of food-related terms are provided.
While I’ll be eating and writing, this blog will ultimately serve more or less as an anthropological compilation of Shanghai’s food culture. Besides finding out what people eat – which you will be able to follow through my posts and photos about dishes – I want to know how people eat in the Pearl of the Orient. What makes eating habits in this city different than in others? What is the cultural significance of food here? After all, it was Confucius who once said, “The way you cut your meat reflects the way you live.”
So, grab your chopsticks, forks and spoons, and follow me on this tasty journey of gastronomic discovery.
