New Site.  Same Foodist.

In trying to keep up with the constantly changing and evolving cityscape of Shanghai, ShanghaiFoodist.com has undergone an evolution of its own.  So take a minute and explore the new site.  While exploring, why not get in touch with me and let me know if there’s anything cool you’d like to see on the new ShanghaiFoodist.com or if you have any hole-in-the-wall or off the beaten track food finds.  Email me here.

The site may be new, the aim remains the same – hunting this huge city for great eats.

Welcome to the new ShanghaiFoodist.com.

Food is by far the tastiest part of our lives, and while some of us live to eat it, none of us can actually live without it.  The way we eat and prepare it and the rituals and customs that surround it can give us interesting insight into a specific culture.  Join me as I look through both the lens of my camera and the analytical lens of food to discover more about Shànghǎi.

In my quest to unveil the practices behind the Shànghǎi food scene (which will cover all food offered in Shànghǎi, not just Shànghǎinese cuisine), I will review restaurants, discover markets, find the best street food as well as the best food streets, learn how to cook a few local dishes, and of course, try to get a hold of the perfect dumpling in the ‘Hai.

And in an attempt to help people stop frantically pointing at their desired ingredients when they order their next bowl of noodles and start speaking a little pǔtōnghuà, I will also be providing a working glossary of Chinese terms used in the blog.  Feel free to check out the Glossary page – the pinyin (the modern transliteration system), Chinese characters, and English definitions of food-related terms are provided.

While I’ll be eating and writing, this blog will ultimately serve more or less as an anthropological compilation of Shànghǎi’s food culture and a journal of food porn photography.  Besides finding out what people eat – which you will be able to follow through my posts and photos about dishes – I really want to know how people eat in the Pearl of the Orient.  What is the cultural significance of food here?  After all, it was Confucius who once said, “The way you cut your meat reflects the way you live.”

So, grab your chopsticks, forks and spoons, and follow me on this tasty journey of gastronomic discovery.
